Hi Tech Elevator Speeches – Will They Work for AEC?

by Jan Flesher on August 25, 2010

After reading George Dearing’s blog (http://georgedearing.com/your-smartphone-will-transform-your-elevator), I followed the link back to the original article at HBR blog by Michael Schrage (http://blogs.hbr.org/schrage/2010/08/smartphone-transform-elevator-pitch.html). Basically the discussion is about how a handheld device becomes an entrance point into the conversation and specifically, that “hand-it-over” innovation pitches are the wave of the future for startups.

This seems to be a possibility for those technologically minded firms that have innovative services or ideas that can readily be adapted to an animation or similar application. I could foresee when BIM (Building Information Management) first began, a structural engineering pulling out a handheld device and selecting an animation of conflict analysis to quickly show the relevance of the technology to the project. I can also envision sustainable topics like natural cooling or passive solar being explained through some sort of App on your iPhone.

Schrage is looking futuristically at “hand-it-over” being part of the regular sales pitch or cycle. You know, like tomorrow or maybe next week. Technology changes so rapidly that you could miss it all together. The creation of relationships begins with conversation, but I can see how this technology can move beyond gimmick mode and into a great tool that could visually connect what you are discussing with an actual concept or service. If anyone out there in the AEC industry is already implementing these types of tools, let me know.

Max Headroom, My 80′s Icon

August 23, 2010

This column is hysterical. Ok, so maybe not just the column but the discussion that takes place due to the column. Scott Brown wrote an article for Wired Magazine entitled, “Scott Brown on How Max Headroom Predicted the Demise of TV Journalism”  (http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/07/pl_brown_tvjournalism/). I love Max Headroom. The social commentary on the media as the [...]

Process, Process, and More Process

For as systematized as any processes can get, the human factor seems to bog things down. And by bog I mean throwing a wrench into the mechanisms frequently, but in a different manner each time. Now I am a person who has a great distaste for wasting my time and I don’t want to waste [...]

Rough Start

August 17, 2010

It’s moving day and here’s how it’s going: 1) Dropped my wife at work this morning and a seagull covered, yes covered my windshield with pooh. 2) I found out that at my last oil change (4 days ago), the folks didn’t refill the windshield wiper fluid. It only got more ridiculous as I am [...]

Making Another Move

August 17, 2010

For those of you who know me, calm down. I’m just moving across the office to a new space, not changing jobs. I am, however, thinking quite a bit about this being a new beginning. Really, we need to seize the opportunities to change whenever and wherever they come round. This is a new beginning [...]

Quite A Concept

August 13, 2010

As I strolled across to the infamous coffeehouse to cash in my treat receipt and get a tasty frozen drink for a mere $2, I was struck. Not injured, but struck by a thought. How could my business integrate a “treat receipt” with its services? Is it possible? First I should explain that I market [...]
